Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimp is known for its unique sweet flavour, delicate texture, and a slightly spicy taste.

The freshly caught local shrimp are cooked in spiced butter until they are the perfect texture and then put in pots, best served warm or at room temperature. The potted shrimps go perfect with toast and are great as a starter or a light snack.

The shrimps are sealed with butter and transported all over the country, but there is no better place to try the local food than the town it’s caught in.

Fresh Fish from the Coast

A whole range of seafood is caught on Morecambe’s coast such as salmon, sea bass, cod, haddock, whitebait and more. With this grand variety, you are guaranteed to get fresh fish.

The most traditional type of seafood caught in Morecambe Bay is shrimp, going all the way back to before the 18th century, when shrimp nets were pulled by a horse and cart.

While the method has changed now as it is replaced with tractors, the traditional potted shrimp is still the same and is being carried on to this day.

Did you know:

Morecambe Bay’s football team were nicknamed “The Shrimps” because of this local dish.

According to the Queen’s former chef, Baxter’s Morecambe Bay shrimps are one of her favourite foods to have.

Keeping the Traditions Alive

While potted shrimps are a part of Morecambe’s history, it is not as well-known as it used to be. With shrimp trawlers in decline, the knowledge has been lost through generations, there is a fear of losing this piece of culture. If you are visiting Morecambe, it would be worth trying this tasty dish.

Other Local Foods from The Bay

Salt Marsh Lamb – Located in Cockerham, a village not far from Morecambe, this local lamb has a unique flavour deriving from the diet of the sheep that graze on the marshes.

Heritage Beef – This Beef is from a breed of cattle native to Lancashire, which are slower-grown, and grass-fed which gives the best-tasting beef.

Lancashire Cheese – There are many places around the bay that supply delicious crumbly local cheese with its distinct creamy flavour.

Seafood and Shellfish – Shellfish like cockles are caught locally and sold as street-food. As well as this, there is no better place to get fish and chips than Morecambe Bay.

Full English Breakfasts – While the full English is found all over the country, if you have never had a full English before, Morecambe is a great place to try it – including our hotel!

The Morecambe Bay Hotel

The Morecambe Bay hotel is a large hotel located right on the coast at Marine Road, Central Promenade in Morecambe. We are within walking distance from the train station and have easy access to the M6. With our hotel facing the coast, you’ll always get a beautiful view of the seaside.

What is Miss Great Britain?

Beauty contests in resort towns were a popular attraction in the 1940s. Seaside beauty contests were introduced all around the country after World War Two. As Morecambe was becoming more popular, the Morecambe Local Council along with the Sunday Dispatch newspaper decided to organise a commercial beauty contest to drive more people to Morecambe, which further began to turn into a national event.

Where in Morecambe was Miss Great Britain Hosted?

Miss Great Britain was hosted in what was the Super Swimming Stadium, said to be the largest outdoor pool in Europe when it opened in 1936. At a total cost of £130,000 and measuring over 36ft by 11ft, it was often full of people in the café, the sunbathing deck, the 3-deck promenade, or watching the swimming. It wasn’t until after the second world war that the giant stadium began hosting the “Bathing Beauty Queen” contest, which would continue and develop to become Miss Great Britain.

The first Miss Great Britain Final

At the end of August in 1945, the first-ever final was hosted. The stadium was crowded full of 4,277 people as Morecambe was pouring with rain. The judge of this event was popular Gainsborough film star at the time, Michael Rennie, and he chose Lydia Reid, a civil typist from Morecambe as the winner. The prize was a swimsuit, a cup and ‘a paltry prize’ of seven guineas, according to the local newspaper. Another local winner was Rose Marie Franklin from Lancaster, who went on to be crowned Miss World in 1961.

Other famous people who judged Miss Great Britain included Richard Tauber, Charlie Kunz, Wilfred Pickles, Doris Waters, and Laurel and Hardy. People would travel from all over Britain to Morecambe to see the contest.

Miss Great Britain Through the Years

As the years went on, the contest became bigger as the prize money increased. The 50s saw crowds of up to 6000 watching Miss Great Britain, with a £1000 prize. Through the 60s, there was a slight decline due to there being less frequent visits to Morecambe, however, during the 70s the popularity began to rise again as Miss Great Britain was introduced to TV.

Miss Great Britain – A Piece of Morecambe’s History

Despite Miss Great Britain being hosted in a different location these days after the closing of the Super Swimming Stadium, the contest will always have its roots in Morecambe. The contests history and old photos serve as a reminder to what British seaside holidays were like throughout the 1900s. The Morecambe Bay hotel looks over the coast, close to where the contest was once held. The old location for the Super Swimming Stadium is set to be turned into a site for the Eden Project in 2023.

The Morecambe Bay Hotel is a perfectly placed bed & breakfast located at Marine Road, Central Promenade in Morecambe, Lancashire. The ideal location for watching the sunset right on the coast.

Our cosy hotel on the coast and within walking distance from the train station and bus station and easy access from the M6.

How Morecambe became a town

Morecambe Bay was built around the small fishing village of Poulton-le-Sands after the railway was established and connected to surrounding areas. The population began to increase following this new railway and began to be built into the seaside resort known as Morecambe.

Victorian Morecambe

Due to the increase of population and tourism in the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s, Victorian buildings were erected, many of which still remain today. The most famous of these long-lasting buildings is the Winter Gardens. Starting out as a ballroom in 1878, it is now an event hall hosting many events. It still remains as an impressive piece of architecture and gives insight into the past.

Morecambe in the 1900’s

For the early parts of the 1900’s, Morecambe became well known as a popular seaside resort. With many people coming in from Lancashire and Yorkshire for their holidays, there was an abundance of people going out to the beach, to the cinema, the many shops, ballrooms and live music venues. From the 1930’s to the 1950’s, this was known as Morecambe’s golden age and it was an important time in its history.

Morecambe’s Revival

Despite Morecambe’s decline in tourism towards the late 19th century, Morecambe’s beach still remains a beautiful location with a lot of character, and it is wonderfully lively on sunny days. There may not be the same seaside attractions that there used to be, but Morecambe is appreciated for its history, long-standing Victorian buildings, its pier and the coastline. As well as this, there are still plenty of activities, venues and restaurants and hotels that overlook the picturesque bay, such as the Morecambe Bay Hotel.

Morecambe Bay Hotel

The Morecambe Bay Hotel is perfectly located within easy reach of the M6, Heysham Port, and within walking distance of the train station with regular train and bus links connecting Morecambe to mainline routes via nearby Lancaster. Our comfortable bar and lounge offer a warm welcome to business guests and holidaymakers, we are family and dog friendly. Come and enjoy a cosy room, free parking, and a big breakfast.

The Morecambe Bay Hotel – The ideal place to enjoy and visit

Following what seems like a lifetime in lockdown, the government have introduced measures to further ease lockdown regulations with pubs, hotels and restaurants set to reopen on July 4, after publishing guidance on how to reopen hospitality businesses. With our re-opening on the horizon, we are extremely pleased to be resuming and serving our customers once again, with our primary concern being centred around the health and safety of our staff and visitors. You have our assurance that we will be following the additional guidelines and precautionary safety measures to minimise any risk of Coronavirus contamination and maintain a safe and welcoming environment so that you can relax and enjoy your time here.
