How Morecambe became a town

Morecambe Bay was built around the small fishing village of Poulton-le-Sands after the railway was established and connected to surrounding areas. The population began to increase following this new railway and began to be built into the seaside resort known as Morecambe.

Victorian Morecambe

Due to the increase of population and tourism in the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s, Victorian buildings were erected, many of which still remain today. The most famous of these long-lasting buildings is the Winter Gardens. Starting out as a ballroom in 1878, it is now an event hall hosting many events. It still remains as an impressive piece of architecture and gives insight into the past.

Morecambe in the 1900’s

For the early parts of the 1900’s, Morecambe became well known as a popular seaside resort. With many people coming in from Lancashire and Yorkshire for their holidays, there was an abundance of people going out to the beach, to the cinema, the many shops, ballrooms and live music venues. From the 1930’s to the 1950’s, this was known as Morecambe’s golden age and it was an important time in its history.

Morecambe’s Revival

Despite Morecambe’s decline in tourism towards the late 19th century, Morecambe’s beach still remains a beautiful location with a lot of character, and it is wonderfully lively on sunny days. There may not be the same seaside attractions that there used to be, but Morecambe is appreciated for its history, long-standing Victorian buildings, its pier and the coastline. As well as this, there are still plenty of activities, venues and restaurants and hotels that overlook the picturesque bay, such as the Morecambe Bay Hotel.
